These words all describe people feeling happy about something that has happened
or is going to happen.
glad [not usually before noun] happy about something or grateful for it:
EX:
He was glad he’d come.
She was glad when the meeting was over.
happy pleased about something nice that you have to do or something that has
happened to somebody:
EX:
We are happy to announce the engagement of our daughter.
pleased [not before noun] happy about something that has happened or something
that you have to do:
EX:
She was very pleased with her exam results.
You’re coming? I’m so pleased.
delighted very pleased about something; very happy to do something; showing
your delight:
EX:
I’m delighted at your news.
proud pleased and satisfied about something that you own or have done, or are
connected with:
EX:
proud parents
He was proud of himself for not giving up.
relieved feeling happy because something unpleasant has stopped or has not
happened; showing this:
EX:
You’ll be relieved to know your jobs are safe.
thrilled [not before noun] (rather informal) extremely pleased and excited about
something:
EX:
I was thrilled to be invited.
2. Sure
There are several ways to replace ‘sure ’ with the following words.
These words all describe somebody who knows without doubt that something is
true or will happen.
confident
convinced
certain
positive
clear
*’sure’ [not before noun] without any doubt that you are right, that something is
true, that you will get something or that something will happen:
EX:
I am not sure about her arrival.
* ‘sure’ is used to indicate that something will happen in the way that you want or
expect:
* ‘confident’ is a stronger than sure and is more often used in positive statements.
EX:
I’m pretty confident that she will show up.
* ‘convinced’ [not before noun] completely sure that something is true or right,
EX:
I’m convinced that she’s innocent.
*’certain’ [not usually before noun] sure that you are right or that something is
true:
EX:
Are you absolutely certain about your answer?
