THE COMMON USAGE OF ‘WOULD’ IN ENGLISH
‘WOULD’ in English is commonly used to express the following meanings.
1. Using ‘WOULD’ to express a repeated action in the past
Would can be used to show an action that was repeated regularly in the past. When would is used to express this idea, it has the same meaning as used to.
Example:
I remember my Grandpa very well. Every time he visited my house, he would give me a big kiss and pinch my cheek.
2. Using ‘WOULD’ to make polite requests
Would is normally used to ask some one to do something politely.
Example:
Would you close the door, please?
3. Using ‘WOULD’ to make wishes about the future
Would is usually used to indicate that the speaker wants something to happen or someone other than the speaker to do something in the future. The wish may or may not come true.
Example:
I missed part of the lecture because I was daydreaming, and now my notes are incomplete. I wish I would pay more attention to the lecturer.
4. Using ‘WOULD’ to give opinions
Would is used either to simply give opinions politely or to give opinions that the speaker isn’t sure he’s correct.
Example:
It’s been 2 hours since he left. Should we call the police?
I would think we need to wait a few more minutes to see if he comes back safe and sound.
5. Using ‘WOULD’ to express and ask about probability
Would is used to say that something is possible, but not certain.
Example:
I heard a big noise outside last night. What would that be?
I guess that would be a thunder because it rained heavily last night.
