According to the survey results, students are currently using a variety of technologies
through social networks to serve their English learning purposes. The use of social
networks brings the following advantages and disadvantages.
In terms of advantages, students through social networks link and cooperate with each
other into groups of people with similar interests and interests on the basis of exchange
and learning from each other. This helps them improve their English skills. At the same
time, thanks to the scientific use of the network and clear goals, many students have
made remarkable achievements in learning. In addition, technology brings a very
diverse, rich and useful source of information.
However, the disadvantage of social networks is that it makes it difficult for learners to
filter information. In addition, some students still do not clearly identify that the main
purpose of using social networks is to improve knowledge, improve language skills and
often get caught up in recreational activities.
From this assessment, the authors would like to propose some solutions.
- For effective self-study, students first need to build self-discipline. Along with online
learning, students need to join an online English club. This is really a good playground
for them to exchange, learn and share the useful knowledge they have.
- Besides, this activity will bring better effect if there is the intervention of the teacher.
Teachers will be the ones to build, orient, and help students understand what the
concept of self-study is. Lessons have a lot of interactive activities between teachers
and students, or between students. Questions in the process of interaction like this will
become the main motivation to help students self-discipline, and desire to find the
correct answers to build lessons in class. Since then, the relationship between
classroom learning and self-study becomes more intimate. Teachers also have a role in
introducing and providing useful and accurate websites to students.
- Technology opens up the possibility of interaction between learners and learning
materials (Jung, 2014). In fact, students tend to favor learning methods with materials
available online and minimize the level of direct human-to-human interaction. But to get
the best results, students need to flexibly combine these forms of interaction.
