SUGGESTED STEPS FOR IELTS WRITING TASK 2


In order to complete Ielts Writing Task 2 successfully, you are recommended to take the
following three steps including plan, write, and revise.
Step 1: PLAN (10 minutes)
- Read the essay question comprising a statement and a question asking your opinion.
- Decide what type of essay questions it belongs to. Following are the most common
question types in Ielts writing task 2.
+ Agree or disagree
+ Describe advantages and disadvantages
+ Discuss two points of view and give your own
+ Suggest solutions to a problem
+ Answer two questions

- Write a thesis statement. It should present the topic and address what the task asks for
like showing agreement or disagreement, describing advantages and disadvantages,…
- Make notes about main ideas and supporting details.
Here you will write notes about main ideas and supporting details that will make up the body of
your essay.
The main ideas support your thesis, and the supporting details explain each main idea. There
should be two or three main ideas per essays and at least 2 supporting details per main idea.
Step 2: WRITE (25 minutes)
After planning you should spend about 25 minutes on writing. You are advised to use your
outline as a guide to writing your essay.
- Write the Introduction
The introduction states your thesis and tells the reader how you plan to develop your ideas.
- Write the paragraphs
You use the main ideas and supporting details from your outline to the sentences for each
paragraph. You are expected to use correct grammar, and spelling and show variety in your
vocabulary and sentence types.
- Write the Conclusion
It is a restatement of the thesis and main ideas you laid out/ presented in the Introduction.
