More ways to express gratitude to someone

More ways to express gratitude to someone (Ms Oanh)

“Thanks” and “Thank you” are the two most common ways to express your gratitude to someone for something, of which “thank you” is a bit more formal. However, there are some other ways. Let’s see the following:

1. Thanks a lot, Thanks very much, Thank you very much và Thank you so much

If you want to put more emphasize on your appreciation, or show your politeness, those are the ones you need.

Thank you so much

Example:

  • Thank you so much for helping me.
  • Hey, watch out”. Thanks!
  • Thank you very much for telling me the truth.
  • Thanks a lot for your consideration.
  • Thanks very much, I got it now.

2. Thanks a bunch

This is somewhat a plain way of saying “Thank you”. And sometimes, it is used to sarcasm or to tease someone that something someone has done is not helpful or good at all.

For example:

  • Did you tell my mom that I skipped the English class the day before? Oh, Thanks a bunch!

3. Much obliged

This statement is a very formal way of saying thank you to someone for what they have done. For example:

  • I’m much obliged to you for helping us.
  • I am much obliged to you for your patience during the recent difficulties

4. You’ve saved my life and  I owe you one/I owe you big time.

This expression is used when we want to thank someone for helping us in a very difficult situation.

For example:

  • Thanks for lending me some money, you don’t know how much this means to you. You’ve saved my life!
  • Thanks a lot for giving me a drive, I owe you one!

6. Cheers

This is a common way that the English often use to thank someone. However, it is just used for someone whom you know well, or those who are very close to you. Remember not to use it to someone whom you do not know or in business emails.

  • “Here’s the book you asked to borrow”
  • “Oh, cheers!!!”

7. You shouldn’t (have)

This expression is used when someone gives you something that surprises you or and it makes you feel happy.

  • Oh gosh!!! Is that for me really??? You shouldn’t have!!!

8. You are too kind

This is a way of saying “thank you” that you sometimes hear , and it seems not to be very sincere.

Thank you for your present. You’re too kind.

Although it express “thank you”, this expression create a distance in communication.

9. I’d like to thank…

This expression is used in speaking, however, it is used in formal situation, in award presentation, for example.

  • I’d like to thank the director for supporting us.

10. Many thanks

This expression is widely used in formal situation, as in letters or business emails.

  • Many thanks for your agreement.

"Many thanks" is almost put at the end of the business emails.
