Improving TOEIC test (part 1)

1. Set a goal If you decide to take the English TOEIC test.
Congratulations. The first thing you need to do is set yourself a learning goal. If you take the
exam to apply for a job, you need to set your goals higher. In general all positions require a
minimum score of 600. Management positions may require a higher assessment score of 800
points. Set appropriate goals for yourself. If your aim is too high, you will probably be
disappointed in your score. Remember that you can register for the exam at any time when you
are ready.
2. Understanding the test
Before starting the TOEIC test, you need to equip yourself with a good understanding of the
structure of each test section. The exam tests two skills, listening comprehension and reading
comprehension. You should learn English and familiarize yourself with the TOEIC test format by
practicing sample tests.
3. Make a study plan Procrastination is one of the reasons why many candidates fail the TOEIC
test. In order to achieve the desired results, you need to make a study plan for yourself right
from the moment you decide to take the TOEIC test and should not wait until the exam is close
to make a review plan. Choose for yourself reliable TOEIC preparation books if you decide to
self-study or find a TOEIC test preparation class before taking the exam. To get the best results,
you should prepare for the exam in both formats. If you cannot afford to take a TOEIC
preparation class, make sure that the type of book you choose for test preparation has clear
answers and explanations for each question. If you choose to take a TOEIC course before the
exam, you should trust your instructor and give yourself a comfortable feeling when you come
to class. Study with another friend and set goals for both of you. Picking a time to study at a
fixed time of the day and repeating daily review will quickly improve your score. Make a study
plan and stick to it.
4. Allocate study time appropriately
The TOEIC test consists of 7 parts. Each section has its own set of points to focus on. Don't
spend too much time studying for a particular exam. Many test takers make the mistake of
studying only for their favorite part of the test and spending too much time on it.
5. Improve/Increase Vocabulary
Another reason why many candidates fail the TOEIC test is that their vocabulary is too
small/limited. When deciding to take the exam, candidates need to make sure that they have a
rich vocabulary in many different areas. The best advice is that learners should have a small
notebook and write all the new words in it. Don't learn new words from a list of words. Because
you can only remember words in the best and easiest way only thanks to the context of the
word. So for each word you come across in the learning process, write that word and learn it in
a sentence. After each study week, you should write a letter or short essay and use as much of
the words you learn in that week. Bilingual dictionaries should not be used during word

learning. Electronic dictionaries will make your word learning so much easier. It won't be
possible to remember the word if you don't put a little effort into understanding and
remembering it. Always remember that the TOEIC exam has a commercial theme. Therefore,
you should hone your vocabulary on topics like travel, banking, health, restaurant, office, etc.
Learning idioms and common expressions related to these topics is also not to be missed.
6. Overcoming weaknesses
After a while getting used to the TOEIC test format, you will know which part you are weak in.
There may be areas of grammar you have not yet mastered. If you are taking a course in a
TOEIC class, please ask your teacher for the help of your teacher to do the extra exercises that
your teacher assigns. If you are self-studying at home, find yourself the best resources that can
help you reinforce those issues. Internet is also one of the tools to support your learning very
well. You can search for explanations or additional exercises on the Internet through the very
effective search tool.
7. Eliminate confounding options
In every TOEIC question, there are usually at least two noise options (which are wrong options
to distract test takers). There are many types of interference schemes such as homonymy,
synonymy, word repetition, and so on. During your study, make a list of the types of
interference options to help you get used to identifying them. That way, when you encounter
them on the test, it will be easier for you to eliminate them.
8. Trust your intuition
Sometimes there are answers that you feel are definitely right or wrong. The harder you study,
the clearer and more precise your feelings about choosing the correct answer will be.
9. Don't try to translate all the words
Translating words and sentences in the test often takes a lot of time. In a TOEIC test, it is rare
for a candidate to have extra time. so, if you don't know the new word, you can guess its
meaning based on the context of the sentence or the new words around it. Note that you are
not allowed to bring dictionaries into the exam room. 10. Guessing – the last resort During the
exam, even if you can't find the answer, you should still not leave it blank, but try to eliminate
the noisy options. Guessing the answer can still give you a 25% probability of being correct.
