Grammar is defined as a set of rules that describe how words and groups of words can be
arranged to form sentences in a particular language. Thus, it can be considered the
foundation of a language and plays such an important role as the basis of a language. Hence,
grammar is an essential aspect in enhancing communicative competence.
In fact, there are two core ways that teachers are suitable to teach grammar: deductively and
inductively. Both deductive and inductive teaching has their positive and negative sides and
which approach is useful depend on a number of factors, such as the nature of the language
being taught and the preferences of the teacher and learners. These two approaches have been
applied to grammar teaching and learning.
Firstly, it should be set the way to enhance grammatical compentence with regards to
different types of tenses, and to enhance communication skills by enabling students to speak
English accurately using the correct tenses. However, this activity just targers Lower
Secondary School who have an intermediate level of English proficiency and may be macking
in structural competency and grammatical awareness.
Secondly, teachers tend teachers tend to place more emphasis on the importance of grammar in
writing and reading. While this may help students in answering exam questions and writing
essays, students tend to neglect the application of grammar in daily communication, which
causes them to become less proficient in using proper grammar on a communicative basis.
In the contrast, it will be more motivating for learners if grammar is taught in context as they
will have an opportunity to perceive how the new grammar structures work. In my point of
view, I strongly agree with this statement saying that grammar should be taught in context.
For instance, as a learner, I also prefer the context-based method as it is much easier for me
to understand the concept of the grammar itself.
In summary, teaching grammar in isolated sentences is not going to help the learners
because they cannot see the relationship between the grammatical concepts through a logical
context. It was mentioned in the article that teaching grammar in context provides a
meaningful framework that connects to reality.
