DIFFICULTIES IN ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION

1. Vocabulary difficulties
It is still said that reading comprehension is a great way to learn vocabulary.
This view is not wrong. But can you imagine that there is a reading passage where
70% of the words are new, is it still readable? Every word you read is new, you
have to use a dictionary to look up the meaning of each word which is both time
consuming and ineffective. So before you want to read well, you need to have
vocabulary. English vocabulary is countless, even native English speakers cannot
know it all. So you don't need to learn too much, just mastering about 2,500
common words is great. You can then develop more vocabulary through reading
comprehension passages.
2. Grammatical difficulties
English grammar is not simple, but it is not as huge as a treasure of vocabulary.
There are many people who learn English but do not know how to identify phrasal
verbs, phrasal verbs or sentence components. Even people who have studied
English for many years still cannot remember the sentence structure of basic
tenses. This is the factor that becomes a barrier to the reading comprehension
process. Therefore, you learn vocabulary, but you must master basic grammar,
distinguish active sentences, passive sentences, simple sentences, compound
sentences, identify word types, word tenses, etc. to read effectively.
3. Reading texts are too long
There are many English reading comprehension passages that are very long, not
many new words, and the grammar structure is not complicated, but it is easy to
make learners feel bored. To solve this problem, you need to find yourself a
reading that is just the right size. If you're just starting out, you can choose a short
reading, then move up to a medium length reading. Remember there are no
shortcuts to success, so don't try to challenge yourself too much.
4. Methodological difficulties

Many people are still confused about their method of learning English. They do
everything they hear or read somewhere, but don't define their own method.
We can introduce you to a reading comprehension method that has been
successfully applied by many people, which is: Skimming – Detailed Reading –
Summarizing the reading in your own language.
Skimming: Read through the title, underlined, italicized, and bold words in the
passage to guess the basic content of the passage.
Detailed reading: This time you will read in more detail, you will be able to
highlight new words, important phrases and understand the content of the text.
Summary: After completing the reading comprehension, you practice summarizing
to check your knowledge after reading.
5. Don't know how to form a habit
Forming the habit of learning English is an important part of success. By reading
and understanding English every day, doing it in a fixed time will form a habit of
the brain, helping you to absorb better. It is best to draw up a fixed timetable,
schedule time for study and strictly follow it. Because whether you are smart or
not, learning a language also needs to work hard to get the expected results.
