A COMPARISON OF 6-Level KNLNN AND CEFR PROFICIENCY TESTS

A COMPARISON OF 6-Level KNLNN AND CEFR PROFICIENCY TESTS (Mr Tich)
Among the common language proficiency tests these days, there is an increasing concern in 6-Level KNLNN AND CEFR PROFICIENCY TESTS. Test takers pay much attention to these exams to get certificate for a number of different purposes. However, they are still confused what and how exactly each test is as well as in which way and areas of language and their performance is assessed. In this writing, i will look at the similarities and differences between these two tests.
In what ways can the descriptors provided in the 6-level KNLNN and in the CEFR document be used to assess the speaking competence level of a test taker?
The descriptors provided in the 6-level KNLNN and in the CEFR document are used to assess the speaking competence level of a test taker as follow.
The test taker’s speaking performance is analyzed and assessed in different sub-skills or criteria. Based on The 6-level KNLNN, pronunciation, fluency, accuracy, social linguistic appropriateness, task fulfillment are evaluated and assessed while CEFR document bases its assessment on spoken interaction an spoken production and aspects of spoken language like range, interaction, fluency, accuracy and coherence. Basing on the analysis and evaluation result for each sub-skill or criteria of the test taker’s speaking performance, the examiner or rater checks the descriptors from the 6-level KNLNN and in the CEFR document and decide which descriptor of each criteria will best describe the test taker’s performance for those sub-skills from which the examiner can determine which level the candidate is. A candidate will be classified into one of six levels from 1 to 6 if he/she is assessed using The 6-level KNLNN exams or A1 and A2 (Basic User), B1 and B2 (Independent User), C1 and C2 (Proficient User) in case CEFR documents are utilized.
For a test taker, these descriptors are very important and useful because they tell him/her how good their speaking skill and sub-skills of this skill are. What he/she needs to improve to get higher level of speaking competence.
Identify the speaking competence level of the Vietnamese test taker in the given video clip. You may use the table of Qualitative Aspects of Spoken Language Use for reference to complete this task. To justify your assessment, be sure to cite examples from the clip to provide specific evidence of the test taker’s performance that demonstrates her level of oral competence on different dimensions. These include task achievement, grammatical accuracy, lexical range, lexical control, phonological control, fluency, etc.
I hope that this writing is beneficial for both test takers and test raters. Test takers should take the mentioned criteria into consideration to prepare well and get the best result while test examiners need to study the criteria and scoring instructions in details to give reliable and accurate grades on which right evaluation will be given for test takers’ performance and proficiency.
