TIPS FOR WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

TIPS FOR WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY (MS BAO YEN)

You may encounter this type of post with the following questions/requests:

- Do you agree or disagree?

- To what extend do you agree or disagree?

To answer this question, you will usually have three answer options:

1. Strongly agree

2. Strongly disagree

3. Partly agree/disagree

Depending on your point of view, the ideas in the body will be implemented differently, but we still have a general outline for this type of essay as follows:

Part 1: Introduction

In the opening part, similar to all other types of essays in IELTS Writing task 2, you will have to complete the following steps:

Step 1: Rephrase the statement in the article, limiting the topic of the article

Step 2: State your point of view (Agree/Disagree/Neutral)

Part 2: Body

The body of an essay will normally consist of two paragraphs, however, depending on what you choose to take your point of view, these two paragraphs will be developed in different ways:

- Paragraph 1 (Main paragraph 1) Paragraph 2 (Main paragraph 2)

+ Totally agree: Give reason 1 for opinion agree Give reason 2 for opinion agree

+ Totally Disagree: Give Reason 1 for Disagree Give Reason 1 for Disagree

+ Neutral: Make a point about one side of the problem Give a point of why you agree with the other side of the issue

Besides the 3 main body implementations as above, you can also implement your body in another way when you agree or disagree with the statement:

- Paragraph 1: Explain why you accept one side of the statement given

- Paragraph 2: Give reasons to assert that you agree/disagree with the statement

This is the method that is preferred by you today, due to the tendency to issue a topic and at the same time, with this way of developing this idea, you will show critical thinking that makes your writing better. worth more.

When writing body paragraphs, you need to make a clear point, and use a few methods to implement this point in the most clear way:

- Give an example

- Give an explanation

- Give result

Part 3. Conclusion

For the conclusion, there are two things you will have to complete:

- Reaffirm your point of view (Completely agree / Totally disagree / Neutral)

- Summarize the main points raised in the article to reinforce that point

With this conclusion, you will help the reader feel the completeness of the article and help your article agree on ideas with the two parts above.
