SOME TIPS FOR USING INVERSION STRUCTURES IN ENGLISH (PART 1)
1.Inversion structures in conditional sentences
TYPE 1 Should + S + V, S + will/ should/ may/ shall + V
For example:
If Petter borrows some money from his best friend, he will buy this white car.
➔ Should Peter borrow some money from his best friend, he will buy this white car.
TYPE 2 Were + S + to V, S + would/ could/ might + V
Or Were + S…, S + would/ could/ might + V
For example:
If I had enough money, I would buy that house.
➔ Were I to have enough money, I would buy that house.
TYPE 3
Had + S + V_ed/ PII, S + would/ should/ might have Ved/ PII
For example:
If he had come the party, he would have met her.
➔ Had he come the party, he would have met her.
2. Inversion structures with adverbs of frequency
Never/ Hardly/ Little/ Rarely/ Seldom/ Scarcely/ Hardly ever + Auxiliary + S + V
For example:
Lisa rarely goes to school early.
➔ Rarely does Lisa go to school early.
I knew little about geography.
➔ Little did I know about geography.
Some other structures:
Hardly/ Scarcely + had + S + V_ed/ PII + when + S + V (chia ở thì quá khứ)
= No sooner + had + S + V_ed/ PII + than + S + V (chia ở thì quá khứ)
For example:
Hardly had my girlfriend left her home when I arrived.
➔ No sooner had my girlfriend left her home than I arrived
3. INVERSION with structures containing ONLY
TYPE 1
Only once:
Only later:
Only in this/ that way: + Auxiliary + S + V
Only after + V_ing/ N:
Only by + V_ing/ N: Only with + N:
Only in + Adv of time/place
For example:
Only by studying harder can she pass this exam.
Only once did I meet her.
Only in this way can the project be done quickly.
Only with courage could we finish our challenge.
Only in Vietnam did they see such beautiful landscapes.
TYPE 2
Only when:
Only after: + S + V (finite) + Auxiliary + S + V
Only if: chỉ
For example:
Only when she left did he understand her love for him.
Only if she was not sick did she attend the concert with her friends.
Only after she had finished the course did she realize she had made a wrong choice.
