SOME COMMON SENTENCE PROBLEMS AND WAYS TO IMPROVE
1-SENTENCE FRAGMENTS: are incomplete sentences or parts of sentences.
Wrong: Because some students work part-time while taking a full load of courses.
Right: Because some students work part-time while taking a full load of courses, they have very little free time.
2-CHOPPY SENTENCE: are the sentences that are too short (the overuse of short simple sentences).
Ineffective:
We must find new sources of energy. Natural sources of energy are dwindling. Solar energy is promising new sources of energy. Solar energy is energy from the sun.
Effective:
We must find new sources of energy because natural sources of energy are dwindling. Solar energy, which is energy from the sun, is a promising new source.
3-RUN-ON SENTENCE: is a sentence in which two or more independent clauses are written one after without punctuation or without coordinator.
Wrong: My family went to Australia then they emigrated to Canada.
Right: My family went to Australia, then they emigrated to Canada.
4- STRINGY SENTENCE: is a sentence with too many independent clauses (the overuse of long compound sentences)
Ineffective:
Many students classes all morning, and then they work all afternoon and they also have to study at night so they are usually exhausted by the weekend.
Effective:
Because many students classes al morning, work all afternoon, and study at night, they are usually exhausted by the weekend.
5-UNPARALLEL FORMS:
Ineffective: My English conversation class is made up of Chinese, Spaniards, and some are Bosnians.

Effective: My English conversation class is made up of Chinese, Spaniards, and Bosnians.

6-PLACEMENT OF MODIFYING WORDS, PHRASES, AND CLAUSES
The way you place modifying words, phrases, and clauses within a sentence will have a dramatic impact on the overall quality and clarity of a sentence. Modifiers, whether they are single words, phrases, or dependent clauses, should be placed as close as
possible to the word or idea they modify.
- Richard dropped the hot pan quickly.
-> Richard quickly dropped the hot pan.
-The number of population in our country is increasing dramatically.
->The number of population in our country is dramatically increasing.
