Choosing to learn a second language means we know we have to learn everything about that language. Remember how we learned languages when we were children? From the moment we are born, we do not know how to use our native language. After a period of time living in a language environment and being exposed to it every day, we naturally know how to speak and listen. When learning another language, especially English, we all know it is an essential skill for modern life. Having English will help you solve: good job opportunities, higher salary for the same position, confidence in life, ability to advance. And among English skills, speaking is one of the most used skills in communication, helping you express yourself the most.
The first important thing when communicating with foreigners in general that attracts their attention is not your tone, grammar, vocabulary or speaking speed, but your PRONUNCIATION, when you pronounce correctly. and yes they will understand you faster and more accurately. The correct pronunciation of each English word is like adding /,?,\... to each Vietnamese word. In Vietnamese, punctuation determines the meaning of words, the same in English. Vietnamese pronunciation is complete + correct + punctuation creates a specific meaning. The same goes for English.
If you want to pronounce English well, you should:
1. Choose for yourself the English accent that you like or that you find suitable: English - British, English - American or English - Australian.
2. Have a standard pronunciation dictionary: for example, Cambridge Learner's Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, dictionaries from famous publishers such as Oxford Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, MacMillan Dictionary,... (Today, smart phone apps all have free dictionaries from these publishers, you can easily download and use them)
3. Identify and pronounce all sounds in English correctly. If you want to speak correctly, you have no choice but to pronounce each sound correctly in English. And so you have to practice pronouncing all the individual sounds very well until you are fluent and can combine them into standard words.
4. Learn to speak with an accent. English does not have accents like Vietnamese, but native speakers speak English very well and have accents because English words have accents. Therefore, when learning words, we must know which syllable the word's stress is on, and how we must stress it.
5. Learn to speak with the correct intonation. Intonation shows the speaker's emotions or meaning. Each language has its own way of expressing intonation. Surprise, resentment, sadness, anger... all of the above emotional states can be expressed in spoken language through intonation. Therefore, you must know how to use the correct intonation to express what you want to say.
6. Regularly check your pronunciation of English words. This is when a standard English dictionary comes into play, my friends. When we encounter a new English word, we should not read it according to our reflexes or predictions. It's best to use a dictionary and learn the correct pronunciation from them.
7. Practice listening and recognition. Regular listening practice is the best way to learn English pronunciation. Turn on TV, radio, podcasts, shows, movies... When listening, focus on how each sound or word is pronounced. Try to guess what sound that sound is. When you listen to non-native speakers of English, listen for their pronunciation mistakes.
8. Practice speaking. We should practice speaking slowly, saying each word and then speaking in phrases. We should not rush to say whole sentences when our pronunciation is not good. Remember, slow but steady, guys.
9. Having someone to practice speaking with and who can correct your mistakes is the best thing.
10. The learning method that helps us develop the fastest is: listen - copy - read along - speak.
