Practical Ways for Students to Develop Speaking Skills with AI

For university students, AI can provide more opportunities to practice speaking outside the classroom. Instead of using AI only to translate words or correct grammar, students can use it as a speaking partner, an interviewer, a role-play partner, and a source of feedback. Here are some practical ways students can use AI to develop their English speaking skills.

1. Practice daily conversations with an AI speaking partner

Students can choose familiar topics such as hobbies, family, university life, food, travel, movies, or weekend plans. They can ask AI to start a conversation and then answer its questions orally.

For example, a student can tell AI: “Please have a five-minute conversation with me about my hobbies. Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer.” The student can then speak naturally and continue the conversation. If the student does not know what to say, AI can provide another question or a useful expression. Practicing for just 10–15 minutes a day can give students regular opportunities to use English.

2. Use AI for role-play activities

Students can ask AI to act as another person and create a specific situation.

For example, AI can play the role of a hotel receptionist while the student plays a guest. The student can practice checking in, asking about hotel facilities, or reporting a problem. Other possible situations include ordering food at a restaurant, shopping for clothes, asking for directions, making a phone call, or talking to a doctor.

Students can make the situations more challenging as their speaking skills improve. For example, after practicing a simple hotel conversation, they can ask AI to introduce an unexpected problem, such as a missing reservation. This encourages students to think quickly and respond spontaneously.

3. Practice job interviews with AI

Students can ask AI to act as an interviewer and ask common interview questions. They should answer the questions orally instead of simply typing their answers.

For example, AI can ask, “Can you tell me about yourself?”, “What are your strengths?”, or “Why do you want to work for our company?” After answering, students can ask AI to give feedback on their vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and the organization of their answers.

Students can repeat the interview several times and try to make their answers clearer and more natural. This method can be particularly useful for students who feel nervous about speaking English in professional situations.

4. Ask AI to give pronunciation feedback

Students can use AI-powered speaking tools to practice difficult words, sounds, and sentences. They can read a short passage aloud and use a tool that can recognize their speech.

For example, if a student has difficulty with words such as “comfortable,” “environment,” or “development,” they can practice saying the words several times. They can also ask AI to provide sentences containing those words and then read the sentences aloud.

Students should not focus only on individual sounds. They can also practice word stress, sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation. These features can make their speech easier for other people to understand.

5. Record a short speech and ask AI for feedback

Students can choose a topic and give a one- or two-minute speech. They can record themselves speaking and then use an AI tool to help analyze the transcript or provide feedback.

For example, students can talk about “A memorable trip,” “My ideal job,” or “The benefits of learning English.” After speaking, they can ask AI to identify repeated words, grammar mistakes, unnatural expressions, or places where their ideas are unclear.

Students can then give the same speech again and try to improve it. Comparing the first and second versions can help them notice their progress and become more aware of their speaking habits.

6. Use AI to expand vocabulary for speaking

Students often have ideas but cannot express them because they do not know enough useful vocabulary or expressions. AI can help students prepare language before a speaking activity.

For example, if the topic is “Travel,” students can ask AI to provide ten useful phrases for talking about travel at their level. They can then use these expressions in a short speech or conversation. Instead of memorizing long lists of individual words, students should learn expressions in context.

For example, they can learn phrases such as “go sightseeing,” “try local food,” “travel on a budget,” and “have a memorable experience.” After learning the expressions, they should immediately use them in their own sentences.

Overall, AI can provide many practical opportunities for students to practice English speaking. Students can use AI as a conversation partner, role-play partner, interviewer, pronunciation assistant, and source of feedback. However, they should not simply ask AI to give them perfect answers. Instead, they should speak first, receive feedback, and try again. Combining AI practice with conversations with teachers, classmates, and other English speakers can help students develop greater confidence, fluency, and independence in using.
