AI AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

How Artificial Intelligence Can Help Students Learn English

Nowadays, technology is becoming an important part of education. One of the most interesting technologies is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can understand language, answer questions, correct mistakes, and provide information. Because of these abilities, many students are using AI tools to improve their English. They can use AI to practise vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and even speaking.

One important benefit of AI is that it can provide personalised learning. In a traditional English class, a teacher usually works with many students at the same time. However, students do not always have the same level or the same learning needs. Some students may find grammar difficult, while others may have problems with vocabulary or pronunciation. AI tools can give students different activities depending on their needs. For example, a student who often makes mistakes with the past tense can ask an AI tool to create exercises about the past tense. Another student can ask for vocabulary exercises about travel, food, or technology.

AI can also be useful for learning new vocabulary. When students read an English text and find an unfamiliar word, they can ask an AI tool for its meaning, pronunciation, and examples. AI can also create short quizzes to help students remember new words. For example, after learning the words environment, pollution, renewable, and recycle, a student can ask AI to create a multiple-choice test. This makes vocabulary learning more active and interesting.

Another advantage is that AI can help students improve their writing skills. Students can write a short paragraph and ask AI to identify grammar, spelling, or vocabulary mistakes. AI can explain why a sentence is incorrect and suggest a better way to express the idea. For example, if a student writes, “People should to protect the environment,” AI can explain that after should, we use the base form of the verb: “People should protect the environment.” In this way, students can learn from their mistakes instead of simply receiving a corrected answer.

AI can also support speaking practice. Some students feel nervous when they speak English in front of their classmates. With AI, they can practise conversations in a more private environment. They can ask AI to play the role of a tourist, teacher, customer, or friend. For example, a student can practise ordering food at a restaurant or asking for directions in a foreign country. Repeated practice can help students become more confident when they communicate in real situations.

However, AI is not perfect, and students should use it carefully. One problem is that AI can sometimes provide incorrect or unsuitable information. Students should not believe every answer automatically. They should check important information with their teachers, textbooks, or reliable sources.

Another concern is overdependence on AI. If students ask AI to write every paragraph, answer every question, or complete every homework task, they may not develop their own English skills. Learning a language requires practice and personal effort. Students need to think, make mistakes, and try again. If AI always does the difficult work for them, they may become less independent learners.

There is also a question of creativity. Writing is not only about using correct grammar. Students need to have their own ideas, opinions, and experiences. For example, when writing about their favourite food, students should describe their real experiences rather than simply copying an answer created by AI. Their personal ideas can make their writing more interesting and meaningful.

Teachers also have an important role when students use AI. Teachers can show students how to write effective questions or prompts for AI tools. They can also teach students how to check information and use AI as a learning assistant rather than a replacement for learning. For example, instead of asking AI to “write my essay,” students can ask, “Can you help me find three ideas for an essay about the advantages and disadvantages of learning English with AI?” This encourages students to think and develop their own writing.

AI as a Learning Partner

AI can be especially useful when it is used as a learning partner. Students can practise with AI every day, even when their teacher is not available. They can ask questions, review vocabulary, practise grammar, and receive immediate feedback. This can make learning more flexible because students can choose when and where they want to study.

For example, a student might spend 15 minutes every evening learning English with AI. On Monday, the student can learn ten new words. On Tuesday, they can practise grammar. On Wednesday, they can have a short conversation with AI. On Thursday, they can write a paragraph and check their mistakes. At the weekend, they can review everything they have learned. This kind of regular practice can help students make steady progress.

However, students should remember that AI is a tool, not a replacement for teachers, classmates, books, or real communication. Speaking with real people is still important because language is used to communicate ideas, feelings, and experiences. Students should combine AI practice with classroom activities, reading, listening to English, and conversations with other people.

Conclusion

AI is changing the way people learn English. It can make learning more personalised, interactive, and convenient. It can help students learn vocabulary, practise grammar, improve writing, and develop speaking confidence. At the same time, students need to be careful about incorrect information and avoid depending on AI too much.

In my opinion, the most effective way to use AI is to learn with it, not learn instead of it. Students should use AI to practise, ask questions, receive feedback, and develop ideas, but they should still do the thinking and learning themselves. When used responsibly, AI can become a useful partner in the journey of learning English.
